Edward Malone is a 23 year old reporter from the Daily Gazette and he is in love with Gladys Hungerton. Ned is a daring man, and not the kind who shrinks from danger. He is also someone who thinks about his actions before he does them. Which is why it is against his nature to adventure in search of dinosaurs in order to impress Gladys.

George
Challenger

Professor George Challenger is a self-confident man. He is used to people agreeing with him which is why when he claims to have found prehistoric animals in South America, it angers him that no one believes him. Professor Challenger is very independent, and he likes to be the leader when it comes to science.

Summerlee

Professor Summerlee is professor of comparative anatomy. He is an opponent of Professor Challenger because he does not believe his claims that there are living dinosaurs in South America. He considers himself to be an intellectually equal to Challenger, which is why they often buttheads throughout the expedition.

John
Roxton

Lord John Roxton is an adventurous man. He is noble and a man of courage and honour, which is why it comes as no surprise when he shares his riches with the rest after his diamond discovery. Lord John is fearless and pragmatic. He is also known for his help rescuing natives who were being enslaved in South America.

TRY YOUR LUCK WITH PROFESSOR CHALLENGER

The story begins with Edward (Ned) Malone, a reporter from the Daily Gazette, who visits his love and the woman he intends to marry, Gladys Hungerton. Gladys is aware of Ned’s intention to marry, and before he has a change to propose, Gladys asks him not to, saying that she wants to marry an adventurous man whose dangerous exploits have made him famous.

Ned asks his editor, McArdle, of an idea to help win over Gladys and meet her marriage requirements. McArdge sends Ned to interview Professor George Challenger, a notorious professor who claims he has discovered dinosaurs in South America,

Later that evening, Ned watches as Challender addresses a group of academics who dismiss his claims as fraud, while Challenger says that he will return soon with proof of his discoveries in South America.

With the memory of Gladys’s refusal in his mind, Ned wants joins Challenger on his trip, however, Professor Challenger is known for disliking the popular press intensely and even at times has been known to physically assaults intrusive journalists. With this knowledge, Ned knows that a direct approach would be instantly rebuffed, Malone instead decides to disguise himself as one of Professor Challengers students.

Challenger quickly sees through this disguise and concludes that Ned is a journalist, which leads to a fistfight. Ned refuses to press charges against Challenger which earns Challengers respect. Ned and Challenger travel to a lecture at the Zoological Institute where Challenger reveals to the public that he will be undertaking a expedition to validate his claims, with Ned Malone , Professor Summerlee and Lord John Roxton accompanying him on his adventure.

The group decide to book a passage on a boat for South America. From there they travel to the town of Manaos, South America. Finally, the group are ready to embark on their journey. After travels from their boat and canoes, the men begin to see the first market that they are on the correct trail.

It is an Assai Palm Tree.

Finally, the group reach the plateau, a region where Challenger claims to have discovered prehistorical animals. It is once the group kill a pig-like animal and are cooking it for dinner, when they are swooped by a pterodactyl . Summerlee finally believes Challenger and apologies for his scepticism.

Lord John Roxton becomes fascinated by some clay he finds while passing a volcanic pit, it is a light blue colour. Roxton collects some and carries it with him as he is curious.

One night, while Ned is on a walk, the others are captured by a group of Ape Men, who tie them up while they are laying down . The ape men reside in an area of the plateau, recognised by the large Gingko tree . The Ape Men are a mixture of human and ape , who have their own language and social structure.

The age men march Summerlee, Roxton and Challenger four miles to the ape village. Interestingly, Challenger was treated very well while Summerlee and Roxton were tied up beneath a tree.

Lord John Roxton manages to escape the next morning , and meets with Ned, who evade searching ape men. They shoot the ape men and rescue the other two, just as the ape men were about to order the execution of Summerlee , by making him jump to death on sharp bamboo.

Great Wonders

The group slowly collect evidence as they make their way out of the plateau, they encounter more pterodactyls, ichthyosaurus’s and stegosaurus’s – some of which they are able to kill to take home as proof of their findings.

The group returns to the civilised world where they pull out a secret piece of evidence, a caged baby pterodactyl . Lord John Roxton also reveals that the reason he was so interested in the blue clay is because he had seen a similar clay at the De Beers Diamond Mine of Kimberley . He lucky recognised that the clay was similar, and contained a substantial amount of diamonds , which he shared with the rest of the group.

With the money the group made, Challenger plans to open a private museum, Summerlee intends to retire, and Roxton is planning on returning on another expedition to the plateau.

When Ned returns to Gladys, she is engaged to another man , who is not an adventurer but rather a law clerk. Ned is very upset by the news, but he returned from his adventure a changed man, who has a new outlook on life
